Acting Commissioners refusal to provide report on reopening of Garda stations unacceptable – McDonald

Mary Lou McDonald TD has today described the acting Garda Commissioner refusal to provide to the Public Accounts Committee the data and methodology used to recommend the reopening of Garda stations including Stepaside as unacceptable.

The Sinn Féin Deputy Leader said:

“On July 13th the then Assistant Commissioner Dónall Ó Cualáin, now acting Garda Commissioner, committed to provide the Public Accounts Committee with an interim report on the reopening of Garda stations including Stepaside within a day or two of the meeting.

“This interim report was to include the methodology and the matrix applied to differentiate between each of the Garda stations considered for reopening. Having failed to produce the report as agreed in July the acting Commissioner subsequently informed the committee that they should direct their request to the Department of Justice and Equality.

“Acting Commissioner Ó Cualáin’s late refusal to provide this information is unacceptable. He is accountable to the PAC. The committee has today agreed to call in the acting Commissioner to next week’s meeting to deal with this issue.

“It was hoped that past controversies and experiences would inform a step change at the highest ranks of the An Garda Síochána and their attitude to accountability. It is disappointing to see the acting Commissioner adopt an approach of business as usual.” CRIOCH
