Aldborough House must be restored for the community, not a soulless corporate entity – McDonald

Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Mary McDonald TD has called for the Government to intervene immediately to ensure that Aldborough House is preserved for community use and not surrendered to private business interests.

Speaking after a planning application for the development of office space inside the 18th century landmark building was lodged with Dublin City Council, the Dublin Central TD said,

“Aldborough House is one of the last remaining Georgian buildings in the north inner city dating back to 1796. It’s perfectly situated to house and showcase the cultural talent of the inner city. It would just be wrong for this beautiful building with all its history and potential to slip into the hands of a soulless corporate entity. Bad decisions by bad governments have resulted in too much of the capital’s rich historic architecture developed for private ownership with no value provided to local communities or being torn down and replaced with mediocre profit driven developments.

“Aldborough House must be restored for the community and the city. I recommended this course of action to Kieran Mulvey and the former Taoiseach Enda Kenny during the recent Government Taskforce consultation. The government now need to acquire this property. Sinn Féin will be campaigning to ensure that this building is restored for community use.  I have also written to Minister Humphries asking that the building be taken into public ownership.” CRIOCH
