British Prime Minister must clarify position on backstop – McDonald

Sinn Féin Leader Mary Lou McDonald TD has said that British Prime Minister Theresa May must immediately clarify her government’s position on the Brexit backstop.

Ms McDonald said;

“The position of the British government regarding the backstop gets muddier by the day.

“We now have a situation where the British Prime Minister is saying one thing to European Leaders – that she accepts the backstop while senior figures in her government gave today told Westminster the very opposite.

“Mrs May must stand over her agreement of December and support the backstop as laid in the draft treaty.”

Speaking earlier in the Dáil, Teachta McDonald said that the onus is on the British government to bring forward solutions to avoid a hard border;

“At a minimum, the backstop must secure the north position within the Customs Union and the Single Market.

“The backstop is a bottom line and a deal on a transition period cannot be progressed without it.

“It is now up to Theresa May and the British government to bring forward credible and workable proposals as to how the imposition of a hard border in Ireland will be avoided.”

She concluded:

“If the British government is serious about avoiding a hard border, if they are serious about minimising disruption to East-West trade, then they must bring forward serious and appropriate propositions which match the scale of the challenge.”
