Dublin Sinn Féin city councillor Janice Boylan has raised the issue of the provision of drug free beds at a meeting with the Minister responsible for National Drug Strategy.
Speaking after the drugs task force meeting Cllr Boylan said:
“Today I asked the Minister to take direct action around a number of issues including the need for aftercare after the person goes through recovery and the need for family- based services and preventative and education- based services.
“This includes more drug free beds and renewed focus on recovery rather than just maintenance.
“There is a need to get legislation moved forward so the Gardaí can have the resources to address the sale of zoplicone on our streets.
“I also raised the homelessness issue reiterating that we needed action right now as it has become an epidemic.
“Years ago the face of homelessness was an older man with alcohol addictions now it’s young people with poly drug use issues and families with children. It’s not good enough!! We need action, resources and funding immediately.
“I am also calling on him to look at the best way forward at promoting safe using rooms for drug users to provide them with a place to use and discard their paraphernalia safety.
“This would give them some dignity back but also to keep our communities and children safe.
“The Minister has insisted he wants to cover the gaps in services and will actively work with community reps, public reps and agencies. I will be holding him to this as will my party colleagues.”
