Sinn Féin Dublin City councillor Janice Boylan has spoken out in full support of safe injection centres for Dublin.
Speaking today she said:
“Every second day I am contacted by residents reporting discarded drug paraphernalia in our neighbourhoods. Streets where our children play and try have a normal childhood.
“Yesterday in Drumalee Estate, off North Circular Road, where may I add there are no designated play areas for the many children living there, I was shocked to be sent a picture illustrating this problem.
“I immediately contacted the central area in Dublin City Centre where the staff where quick to react and had the needles removed.
“I cannot begin to stress the level of anger from residents that drug users would discard such harmful and life threatening objects where children play.
“I have always supported the use of safe injection centres and they have proven themselves to work in places like Australia.
“These centres will help to significantly reduce the amount of drug paraphernalia discarded on our streets and neighbourhoods. They will also help by educating drug users to discard of their needles safely.
“Our children’s lives cannot be placed in harms way, and I am calling on drug users to try to consider the consequences of their actions and to stop discarding their needles in public areas.”
