Fagan ‘horrified’ at Dublin Central homeless figure

Sinn Féin’s Dublin Councillor Gaye Fagan has described the latest homelessness figure for the Dublin Central constituency as ‘horrifying’ calling on the government to take immediate action to resolve this epidemic.

Responding to information from Dublin City Council, requested by Cllr Fagan, she said,

“I’m horrified to learn that 1211 people are currently on the homeless priority waiting lists within the Dublin Central area. Behind these figures are men, women and children, many of whom are struggling in sheer desperation. It’s increasingly obvious that the government is taking little or no action to resolve this crisis – it’s an absolute scandal for any modern society that families are being forced to live on the streets, in cars or in emergency accommodation.

“The Minister Simon Coveney needs to dig his head out of the sand and get on with his job. We have been promised new and affordable social housing builds, but these figures make a mockery of government promises. In recent years the government has ignored Sinn Féin appeals to deal with this housing emergency including our pre-budget proposal to commit €491m into building 7000 new homes. The clock is ticking for immediate action.
