Government has fundamentally undermined public service provision

Responding to the Government’s progress report on its Public Service Reform Plan Sinn Fein’s Mary Lou McDonald TD has described the document as light on achievements and heavy on spin.

The Sinn Féin Public Expenditure and Reform Spokesperson said:

“Far from delivering better outcomes for citizens and business Brendan Howlin and his cabinet colleagues are presiding over services in crisis.

“Young children are now waiting years for speech and language therapy and desperately needed mental health services. Hospitals are operating in unsafe environments and our sickest children are having their medical cards withdrawn on a daily basis.

“Brendan Howlin talks a big talk about the reform dividend for citizens but the reality is for families’ across the state is that service delivery is fragmented, reduced and increasingly hard to access in the first instance.

“Openness and accountability is as poor now as it was under Fianna Fail in government. One of the most common complaints of this government is its failure to deliver on its commitment of institutional reform.

“Cloud computing, eGovernment and shared payroll services are not radical reforms, they are modernising measures that should have been implemented long ago. The bottom line is Labour and Fine Gael in government have fundamentally undermined public service provision and citizens are paying a heavy price for this mismanagement.”
