McDonald condemns inner city shooting and calls on Justice Minister to provide all necessary resources to Gardaí to apprehend those responsible

Responding to the murder of a man last night off North Strand Road local TD Mary Lou McDonald condemned the shooting and called on the Justice Minister to deliver all necessary personnel and resources to An Garda Síochána to apprehend those responsible.

The Sinn Féin Deputy Leader said:

“Last night’s shooting has been roundly condemned in the strongest possible terms by the local community. This shooting took place in a densely populated part of the city that is already struggling with a myriad of social and economic challenges.

“It will be vital in the days and weeks ahead that the Justice Minister continue resourcing An Garda Síochána and provide any additional resources needed to apprehend those responsible and secure convictions.

“The community itself is distraught by the shooting. They want to see an increased Garda presence on the streets and calm restored. It is my strong view that it is time now for An Taoiseach to revisit the North East Inner City Initiative strategy and to review the outcomes to date of the Mulvey Report Recommendations.

“It cannot be emphasised strongly enough the long-term harm to a community that lives under the shadow of violent crime. The Government must step up and live up to the policing and long-term economic and social regeneration commitments it made to the north inner city in 2016.” ENDS
