Speaking ahead of a Dáil vote on the Oireachtas Inquiries Bill Sinn Féin Public Expenditure and Reform Spokesperson Mary Lou McDonald TD set out her party’s support for the legislation.
The Dublin Central TD said
“Sinn Féin supports this legislation and will support the establishment of any inquiry into banking and the bank guarantee of 2008.
“We are keenly aware that such an inquiry will be limited. An Oireachtas Inquiry cannot make adverse findings of fact and cannot interfere with criminal proceedings against any individual. The only forum in which wrongdoers can be held to account is in a court of law.
“Sinn Féin supported amending the Constitution to give the Oireachtas extended powers to inquire into matters of public interest but that said we believe the peoples’ rejection of this proposal must be respected. We would not support any effort by the government to re-run the Oireachtas Inquiries referendum.
“It is also worth noting that former Fianna Fáil Ministers could at any time answer the many questions that remain unanswered about the financial crash, the blanket bank guarantee and the relationship of the previous government with those banks that were recapitalised with public monies.”
