McDonald to lead party delegation in meeting with PSNI Chief Constable

Mary Lou McDonald TD will lead a Sinn Féin delegation including Deputy Leader Michelle O’Neill and the party’s policing spokesperson Gerry Kelly MLA to a meeting with PSNI Chief Constable George Hamilton in Belfast tomorrow, Monday 11 June.

Mary Lou McDonald said:

“This will be my first meeting with George Hamilton since becoming party President.

“It’s an opportunity for Sinn Féin to raise a number of pressing issues with the PSNI Chief Constable.

“Sinn Féin will be asking the Chief Constable what plans he has put in place to ensure there is no repeat of the intimidation last year when people were driven from their homes after loyalists erected flags in mixed developments in south and east Belfast.

“It is important there is a sustained policing effort to tackle the scourge of paramilitary intimidation and violence and its effect on public confidence.

“We will also express our view that the dilution of neighborhood police teams and cuts to the budgets affecting policing with the community is a serious mistake.

“Sinn Fein will also look at cross-border co-operation with An Garda Síochána, the consultation on the legacy mechanisms agreed at Stormont House and the operation of the Policing Board.

“We will also take the opportunity to raise the potential impact of Brexit on policing, including the recruitment of additional officers and the withdrawal of three PSNI stations in border areas from the market.”
