National Maternity Hospital ‘must be free from religious influence’ – McDonald

Sinn Féin Leader Mary Lou McDonald TD has expressed her concern with reports in today’s media which state that the company taking over the St Vincent’s Campus, the site of the new national maternity hospital, will be obliged to uphold the “values and vision” of Mary Aikenhead.

Teachta McDonald said;

“Health services delivered at the new National Maternity hospital must be free from of religious interference. It is clear that there must be legal guarantees to ensure independence from all non-medical influence in clinical operations.

“Last year, the Dáil passed a Sinn Féin motion supporting this demand. Minister Simon Harris needs to make clear that the government will ensure that the ethos of the state-owned facility will be shaped only by modern medical standards and principles.

“We need this clarity as this issue is very significant for patients and particularly for women who will be cared for at the new maternity hospital.”
