Sinn Féin President welcomes announcement by ETA

Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald TD has today welcomed the announcement by ETA that it has decided to formally bring an end to the organisation.

Deputy McDonald said;

“Several weeks ago, it took another significant initiative when ETA’s statement said that it was ‘truly sorry’ for the hurt it had caused.  ”The ETA statement said: ‘We have caused damage that cannot be undone. We apologise to those people and their families.’

“Today’s statement from ETA is a vital contribution to peace and reconciliation in the region.“There is an onus now on the Spanish and French governments to respond constructively and to underpin the hope and optimism which today’s announcement will create, with positive political initiatives, including on the issue of the transfer and treatment of Basque prisoners.

“Peace is not just the absence of violence; it is the presence of justice, equality, dialogue, and democratic principles. “The Spanish and French governments must work with the political parties in the Basque country to help shape a new future based on these fundamental principles.”

Note: Former Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD is travelling today to the Basque Country in south-west France for a conference tomorrow which will seek to advance the Basque Peace Process.
