Time now for Government to deliver on commitment to recognise Palestine – McDonald

Speaking in the Dáil today Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald called on the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney to deliver on the Programme for Government pledge to recognise the state of Palestine.

The Dublin Central TD said:

“When raising this important matter with the Tánaiste today he refused to give any indication of when such a decision will be made by Government.

“The US President has declared Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and intends establishing a US Embassy there.

“Israel’s claim that Jerusalem is the ‘complete and united’ capital of Israel is in violation of international law.

“This Sunday, the 10th of December, marks the 3rd Anniversary of the Dáil unanimously passing a motion to recognise the State of Palestine, with East Jerusalem as the capital.

“There has been complete inaction by the Government. Today I asked the Tánaiste to act in accordance with the democratic wishes of this House and the people of Ireland and to deliver on the Government’s commitment to recognise the state of Palestine.” ENDS
